He could have risen ten minutes before they arrived. Who knows?
According to Matthew 28, the angel rolled the stone away as the women were on their way, or so it seems. Now, whether or not that's when He arose is anyone's guess, as it doesn't say.
Strangely enough, in Mark 14, it appears that Jesus partook of the passover of unleavened bread. Read through verse 16. Weird. Never noticed that before.
Anyway, this is interesting. Let me know what else you find out.

I have never really studied it out but I am pretty sure I always heard it the same way HO

That Thursday was a High Sabbath ( The 1st day of unleavened bread)

Yes (Sundown)

No, that would be 24 hours later (The loss of an entire day e.g. Thursday).
Wednesday was the day of PASSOVER (Christ, our PASSOVER was crucified for us 1 Corinthians 5:7), which ended at sundown.
After sun DOWN (Thursday), the High Sabbath Began: the 1st day of Unleavened bread.

Mark 16:3 "And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?"
Matthew 28:1 "In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre."
In Mat 28:1 look up this word sabbath, it is actually sabbaths (plural).
It was in the end of the Sabbaths, as it began to dawn toward the 1st day of the week. It was not yet 'Sunday'. Mark tells us as they walked they wondered who would roll the stone away (Why did they want to have the stone rolled away?).
They were come to prepare his body for burial. After the High Sabbath, they prepared the the spices for his burial.
Luke 23:55 "And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid."
Luke 23:56 "And they returned, (Friday) and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day (Saturday) according to the commandment."

Keep in mind, God did not combine these two events, the religious Jews did.
God made the first day of unleavened bread a Sabbath, The Passover was not one.

Great Question Michael,
Let me begin by acknowledging your verse is in context but gives a false since of time (by standing alone).

The question in this thread is WHAT DAY did Jesus RISE FROM THE DEAD.
Even Luke 24 provides the answer. The men speaking to Jesus openly confessed that the women who came earlier (The Sabbath) found the tomb ALREADY EMPTY (VS 22,23).
Jesus was crucified on Wednesday taken down to be buried before sundown.
1st day Thursday 6pm - 6am - 6pm = 24 hours
2nd day Friday 6pm - 6am - 6pm = 24 hours
3rd day Saturday 6pm - 6am - 6pm = 24 hours
He was in the heart of the earth 72 hours (3 days, 3 nights as he said).
Remember though, the above time frame does not take into account the time of his burial on Wednesday. He was buried before the High Sabbath and rose from the dead before the 1st day of the week.
The verse you are referencing shows the men recounting the events of Wednesday (The Passover).
Luke 24:46 "And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:"
They confessed this is the third day "SINCE these things were done."
Luke 24:20 "And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him."
Luke 24:21 "But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day SINCE these things were done."
The third day SINCE would be the 4th day in time, yet he was ALREADY risen before the first day of the week on the weekly Sabbath as plainly shown in several passages of scripture.
Nice Question: Hope this helped answer it.

My sweet bippy isn't up for bet, but thank you. I fail to see the relevance either way. If you're concerned about the "day of worship" - whether it is Saturday or Sunday, maybe your religion is pagan as well. EVERY DAY should be a day of worship for the NT church! Where in scripture do any of the apostles or writers indicate that we should esteem one day over another? I find the opposite to be true - every day is the same. Tradition says that we gather for worship on Sunday. So what? We could gather every day, every other day, every Wednesday only, every Friday night only, and still not be in contradiction to what scripture teaches us. The whole notion of "once a week day of worship" is passed down from RCC and could very well be pagan in itself - either that or another move by the RCC to mimic the Jewish Law of Sabbath.
Also, I will challenge your statement in another post where you said that Jesus was in the ground for three days and three nights. I don't have time right now to do a full blown study of it, but as I recall, the gospels all say He ROSE on the third day. If He had been in the ground for three full days and three full nights, he would have risen on the FOURTH day.

I will assure you, in this thread the DAY of the resurrection is all I am concerned with. Its implications are indeed far reaching, but this thread does not concern itself with them. As a teacher, I dislike side bars. Sidebars tend to derail focus. This is not a salvation issue, just a great study out of the scriptures.
He rose ON the third day, not after it. So I repeat my post to Michael (Whose avatar I love!).

Re: Christ rose from the dead on Sabbath, not Sund
Scholars agree that in some cases, in counting any unit of the measure of time, any time during the last unit of measure causes the count to include that entire unit although the unit was not fully fulfilled. For that reason, reference to Christ risinG THE THIRD DAY means DURING THE THIRD DAY he would rise and not necessarily after three full days.
Mark 10:34 KJV And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Great info and how true it is (Thanks for the reference in Mark).
Which is why I stressed that he was buried on Wednesday, not Thursday.
That would make the THIRD day the weekly Sabbath.
Great info Michael, keep it coming!
