Question Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Fox news this morning had a segment on:
Why western women are not going to church

It has been noted that the Wiccan religion being promoted through television programs such as; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as Charmed have focused on empowering women through the practice of casting spells and calling on demonic powers to assist them.

This is what the world is saying is keeping women from church in today's society. What say the Apostolic men and women of this forum? Why the change in women being leaders in going to church and upholding religious practices in the home?

Blessings,
Rhoni

I don't really think that tv has a lot to do with this, although the LACK of exposure to genuine Christianity among so many many young people is I am sure an enormous component of that trend.

People want to feel empowered. Wicca offers them that, at least it promises them that.

I deal on a daily basis with quite a few people who are Wiccans. Not all of them teeny boppers carried away by tv shows, but actually Grandmothers who feel they have discovered a "greener" (read "eco friendly" if you can believe it) form of worshipping "The Powers that Be."

I can't help but notice that it DOES seem to be a very heavily stacked Female constituency in that group, although there are indeed many males.

Interestingly enough it seems that most of the male wiccans that I am aware of are also openly gay. Does THAT have anything to do with it? I wonder...

Witchcraft is one of the works of the flesh that ALL of us have the potential to become destroyed by. And interestingly enough, upon a great deal of reflection, I would be led to define witchcraft very simply, NOT as the controlling of the wind and the waves type image it puts forward, but rather the manipulation of fellow human beings through their EMOTIONS, FEARS and subliminal DESIRES.

Thats why it is so IMPERATIVE that Pentecost be aware of the nature of Witchcraft and see that that very trait (and Watchman Nee points it out very well in his little Book "THE LATENT POWER OF THE SOUL) it is imperative to see that that trait of MANIPULATING PEOPLE THROUGH THEIR EMOTIONS Is EASILY substitued for a genuine move of the Holy Ghost in OUR midst.

I remember sitting in a conference of Pentecostals in San Antonio, listening to a sermon that WOW was so powerful ! Virtually every line out of the preachers mouth was causing the people to jump and run and spin and just go into gales of rejoicing. I was really getting into it when that still small voice of the Holy Ghost spoke to me and said " Its emotional, but WHAT IS
HE SAYING?" And as I listened I thought "OH MY GOODNESS! This man isn't actually SAYING ****ANYTHING*****!"

It was all the inflection and delivery of sentences that HAD NO POINT! And he had the crowd literally dancing like marionettes on speed!

The next day I was with a group of ministers who couldnt say enough about the service the night before..."Wow! That was one of the best messges I have ever heard!" "I have to get THAT guy to preach for our church!" "I have never heard anything even approaching this!!!!!!" And so after a round of accolades, I asked them all But WHAT was his POINT??? (Oblio where are you?)

No one knew (!!!!!) SO I asked well...What did he PREACH on????' Again, no one could even remember! All they could remember was the ecstasy that his oratorical skills lifted them into.

Witchcraft, pure and simple. Manipulation pure and simple. Kind of like a Pentecostal Pavlov and his dogs type experience.

The only way to stand up against this encroaching spiritual trend of replacing the move of God with technology and emotional outbursts of whoknowswhat is to lead people ESPECIALLY young people into a SUPERNATURAL walk and relationship with GOD. One based on the WORD of God rather than so many other things that seem to be the rage these days.
Their own prayer life, their OWN Bible knowledge! Instead of sitting around the dinner table (IF indeed most Pentecostal households even HAVE a dinner table anymore) discussing Hillary and Bill and this movie or that tv program, instead of all that the PARENTS need to guide the conversation to the Word of God, the things of the spirit, dreams , experiences, kind of a nightly recap of the days encounters in GOD.

The men and women out there falling prey to wicca are undoubtedly people who feel weak and vulnerable and feel that if they embrace certain spiritual trends that THEY will have an empowerment that will help them not only NAVIGATE their way through life , but will actually induct them into a higher level of existence that most others simply dont posess, giving them CONTROL over their lives as well as the forces that impact them.

There is SO MUCH MORE we all need to think about in this trend, it IS beoming pervasive in so much of our society, reflecting the trend in CHRISTIANITY to drift farther and farther away from the WORD and the genuine move of the HOLY GHOST into the purple haired scripted sinful type of "Christianity" where moral absolutes (aside from GIVING) are not only never mentioned any more but actually create quite a stir when ever they are even alluded to.

TCSQ,

I quickly read over your post at work but did not have the time or opportunity to do it justice. It is a very good post with many different avenues to think about...I am not as knowledgeable as you about the things you speak of but I will try my best to respond in kind..

I agree that religious upbringing has been sorely lacking among our children. Parents have neglected to make sure their children were raised in a church with Christian examples.

People want to feel empowered. Wicca offers them that, at least it promises them that.

It does promise them many things but they have a high failure rate. I know this because I had quite a few Wiccan clients and they had no peace...that was why they were seeing me.

I have seen as many men as women in Wiccan cirlces as they do it in couples. Most of the clients I have had were bi-sexual, and had gender identiy issues related to molestation and abuse issues...and they were searching because they were not happy or fulfilled in their Wiccan rituals or their relationships.

Most Wiccans deny that it is about witchcraft although they do use seances, spells, and rituals. I think they think of it more as self-empowerment and worship...humanistic in it's highest form.

I had a Wiccan client try my spirit. The client was confrontational and tried to back me into a corner ethically. God gave me the words to say and the power to stand my ground. I went to my car after that session and rebuked the forces of satan trying to attach themselves to me and sabotague the counseling process. God was right there. Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.

You've said a mouthful here...so many Pentecostal/Apostolics think it is in the shout, and the extreme emotionality...but God is not in it...that can be worked up with an intense beat and good musicians. I long for the singers to shut up sometimes and just listen to the word....We need to be careful about what spirit we let into our churches...they are not all of God.

The only way to stand up against this encroaching spiritual trend of replacing the move of God with technology and emotional outbursts of whoknowswhat is to lead people ESPECIALLY young people into a SUPERNATURAL walk and relationship with GOD. It grieves my spirit that we have so few Sunday School classes and the word taught to our young people. I could preach on that a while. Our own children are growing up not knowing the word, or the God which they are taught to praise..they no little of worship!

Amen...you should start a thread or just feel free to tag on to this one...you have so many great insights. Thank you for sharing these with us.

I have been saying this for years now. I can trace my first knowledge of this sort of psychological phenomena during my teens at a camp service. It was exactly the type of "preaching" that you are describing here. Loud and enough sweat flying from the preachers forehead to put Elvis to shame! (Although it had darn near the same effect on the people sitting closest to him.)
Every word he said was followed by a gasp or a "ha ha HA!" and a minute or two of wild shouting.

He was saying NOTHING. A random sermon generating computer program would have been more on point than this guy was.

TV's Buffy Makes Women Stop Going To Church?

BLAME "Buffy."

The teenage vampire slayer is the reason an estimated 50,000 women a year are quitting the church, according to a study published yesterday in Britain.

"Because of its focus on female empowerment, young women are attracted by Wicca, popularized by the TV series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'," the report's author, Dr Kristin Aune, a sociologist at the University of Derby, writes.

"In short, women are abandoning the church," she wrote...

oh.
I didnt even see it when you did.

I thought it was a fascinating study.

Just confirms what I already knew though... that people are seeking "alternate" religions more and more, and to a lof people Christianity has become passe'.
