Tis the Season, Halloween is upon us once more. For the past three years I have written on the subject of Halloween, and this year I have not skipped. Indeed, I have completed it early. I usually put my article online on November first. My research this year is not terribly extensive, as I have no need to get every name of every one who was involved in putting Hallow's Eve on the calendar to replace Samhain. Instead I have focused more on the what we do about Halloween.
Ah! I love this time of year. Halloween. We get paid in candy to dress up as all manner of creatures. Now, some of these costumes are stupid, or inappropriate, and some even vulgar. While I disapprove of them, it’s their right to choose their outfit. Now, in spite of the foolish pagans who use the day to worship Satan, Christians ought to know better than to say the day outright belongs to him, or that ’twas his birthday, an all that garbage that ends up being spoken as truth in the world of Christianity. The sad thing is, while they’re spouting off this nonsense, they aren’t even listening to the truth from many pagans themselves. Pagans don’t like Halloween too much more than many Christians do. Something about it being too commercialized..
Also, Halloween, Hallow’s Eve, was instated by the Catholic church in the early 1600′s unless I remember inaccurately. Now, I’ve heard some Christians say that the day is utterly evil and we should not partake in the activities, or even the day. To them I ask: Does not the Bible say “This is the day that the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”(
Psalms 118:24) ??? Dang.. It sure looks like the day doesn’t belong to Satan to me.
How can you rejoice in God’s creation, an not do anything about it? If we do nothing on Halloween, based on the false teachings that it’s not a day of God, then we violate the Great Commission, which says: “And He said unto them: Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel unto every creature.”(
Mark 16:15) I note that it does NOT say at the end of that command “except when you believe the day is evil.” or “except on pagan holidays.” much less “except on Halloween.” So why do we all choose to defy the Commission on that day? Why are there Preachers who tell us we shouldn’t partake in the activities? We are to be in the World, and not of the World.
Being in the world involves partaking of activities that are not sinful, and allow us to share the gospel with those who don’t know Christ. I understand not allowing your kids to join in, but there comes a time when they need to know why they can’t, and when they can make their own decisions, they may or may not make one you parents particularly like. Silly people would at this point argue with me that no one wants you to go out and give the gospel, because they’re too busy getting candy. THAT”S THE POINT!!!! On Halloween they COME TO YOU. With the candy slip in a tract. You don’t even have to leave your house, it is the easiest day that we have to share the gospel, an how many of us actually take advantage of it?
Bluntly, many of us Christians need to get off our rear ends and begin preparing for Halloween. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (
Isaiah 55:11) Giving out a tract is but one way to give the gospel. Pray during the time you are giving out tracts, and God’s word being given out will reach someone. Somewhere down the line your tract will have the effect of reaching someone for God. You may not ever know it in this lifetime, but in the next, indeed, you shall know.
Farewell, for this is my Halloween article of 2010.
