Who knows. Maybe they eventually learned to love each other and become a stable family with 2 and a half kids and a dog.

She wouldn't have been able to marry anyone else, so it guaranteed her marriage and security for the rest of her life. It was a restitution that made sense in that culture.

when there are severe penalties crime automatically goes down for many reasons.
After a stoning there is one less person in the world to comit crimes.
after a flogging there is one person who is in no shape to commit any crimes any time soon.
it works by the principle of attrition.
