Naw, don't feel that way. I did all my crying 25+ years ago over this. I barely think about it anymore outside of topics like this -or when I actually go to church for my wife's sake.
For me comparing "church" and God are like comparing peanuts and paperclips -in other words they are not even remotely in the same ballpark.
Randy, jesus took those stripes on his back for you too. One of those stripes is for those who were done wrong by religion. jesus loves you as you are. You should go to church because you want too. Since I do not know you I am taking a guess here, you should go because you want to build a relationship with Jesus.

Again, it isn't an issue. I would like to rid myself of the heart palpations I often experience when I stand during a song service, but it doesn't keep me awake at night anymore. I don't go to Church (for the most part) because I don't want to -except for my wife's sake from time to time. "Jesus" does not equal "church" although it was always made to sound like that by the UC's in the movement (apostolic or otherwise). "Be there when the doors are open!" was the mantra of the day, and oh yes, obey your pastor, aka, the man of god, usually followed by a story of someone who didn't and died.

Scare tactics don't save anyone more than when the Word itself is preached in truth and love. Where one gets the idea that screaming and pounding the pulpit 'til they're red in the face equates preaching the truth in love, I have no idea.
I just hope you're able to find reconcilitation (for lack of a better way to put it) with past events and become involved again. After all, you're now an adult and in charge of your own family's well-being.
I've had my own share of hinderances and setbacks of this and that, but time and separation from situations, and people involved in them, can do more good than one might realize, all the while praying and pleading for God to work it out in whatever way is best for everyone...
Let me preface my remarks by saying: What this man did was totally out of line - and I consider it abuse. However, not all "corrective spanking" is child abuse !!!!!!

If you struck an adult with a belt as a form of punishment, that would be considered assault and would land you in jail. Striking a child with a belt is just as bad.
My grandmother would use a switch when we stayed at her house when we got out of line, but she knew when to quit. But I must if she used a switch to us only when we did something that we needed to corrected for.
Me and my cousin would get into mischief ,when we would get together.
