I think that control may be the case in some families. I think it's an issue with kids who can't make decisions for themselves in some cases.
In other families, I think it is a case of very close family ties, loving to spend time with each other, maintaining the family heritage and an unquestionning support system. Some families are friends.
I know that in my family, the fourth generation is just as close to each other as the first generation was. I love that my children are best friends with my cousins' children. I love that we can all get together for family dinners without having to wait for holidays. I love that we can call each other in the middle of the night if there is an emergency and be together within 20 minutes or less. I love that we can all drop in to Grandma's house and if we stay an hour, you can probably see other family members. If you are trying to track one of the family down, go to Grandma's house - that's your best shot.

you were saying that the kids should go away and prove their won worth. It's not always the kids randy. sometimes it's the father that wants it this way. he would not hear of it if the off spring left. I know of a situation like this where the kids are put on a guilt trip etc if they were to leave. some kids stay out of repsect or they feel indebted to do so .

BTW, NO ONE would term our family conservative in any sense of the word. In fact, most all would consider us extremely liberal and some of us would probably be considered almost heretics by conservatives!

Rhoni,
The more liberal churches actually have come full circle while often keeping some basic tenants. Some are now peace activists in addition to pacifists and civil rights advocates in addition to humanitarians. These churches are following in the footsteps others who make the underdogs there cause, and end up accepting homosexuality, female pastors (just to make this post interesting) and antiwar demonstrators.
The true "Plain People" reject these liberals as having departed the faith, while holding a minicule admiration for the basic tenants.

I do think it is a lack of respect to group female pastors with homosexuality. That could boarder on touching God's anointed. Whether you or I believe in women pastors is one thing to group some precious women with some gross sin is another thing...I am sorry if I sound sharp do not mean it like that but a awful feeling came over me when I read that statement. Sorry... and I wish you God's blessings...

Of course, I'm just thinking back a few years...I meant what I said!
However, since I no longer live in Oregon, I won't be at campmeeting anymore.

I'm sure you're right about that. I remember one pastor's kids (pastor who no longer fellowships us) who were the worst snobs I'd ever seen in my life. When I first got into the church, some of that just floored me...I thought...this is supposed to be the Church!!!
