Playing pool, learning how to play pool, outting a quarter in the juke box, talking with friends plenty of productivty in a bar...See people always see the glass half empty I choose to see it half full...I always try to look at the positivity in everything...
But you were not able to find anything positive in the visiting preacher's message to the gathered Saints.

Hustling the patrons at the pool table to make rent money. See that is productive.

I think some people go to bars for the same reason that some people go to church,
"Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.
You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name."

OK, point taken. But there is a lot of variety in bar environments. Some are just people having fun, talking, laughing, meeting people, enjoying life. Yes, there is the flip side, too. Bad things can happen there, and they are more likely to happen there than, say, at a library!
Still, my point is really this: different strokes for different folks. I wouldn't want anyone to go to a bar that doesn't feel comfortable there, any more than you would want anyone to go to .... Oh. Wait. I was going to say "church that doesn't feel comfortable there". Never mind.
