I don't know what it is like in the States but in Canada most preachers would rather sit in the congregation than go on the platform.
Ore of the reasons they will have them on the platform is to make room in (usually) a small sanctuary. They can be ready to say something or testify.
Also at Altar call thay are right there ready to pray for someone.
