Honestly, knowing nothing about the situation, it is easy to make that judgment call. I would agree that generally, that isn't probably the wisest response to such a query.
However, I also think enough of this pastor to believe that he probably doesn't normally say things like that. He very possibly knew or felt in the Holy Ghost something that caused him to reply in that way.
