Ya, it would be like someone saying "Fathers, don't show love for your kids by how much you buy them, but what you do for them!". This
isn't advice not to BUY them 'things', it is just clarifying what is important and what is not. Simple stuff!
I remember people going round and round with RDP (I think that was the posters name) a while back. He seemed to only debate womens issues like hair, jewelry and pastoring. He simply refused to see this simple fact of context and would instead respond with pages of Greek text and translations, much of which was wildly out of context as well.
