I don't believe we have good or bad luck but as was stated there is a certain amount of personal accountability in the outcome.
A saint might still get lung cancer even though they're saved and haven't smoked in years. The past still affected their health due to earlier poor choices.

The same goes for what we therapists call
"over-spiritualizing". I think people use the term "if God wills" as a cop-out for them having to do anything or be accountable.
I agree with the illustration of the smoking habit...it is comparable to many situations in life; God may forgive you for your stupidity but you have to reap the consequences of your behaviors.
