Maybe I don't even know I'm in sin, and maybe that's exactly why God might need to warn me, and maybe it wouldn't make any sense at all to try to warn me in a way that I can't even tell it's a warning!

There would be no reason for anyone to be in sin and not know it.
You are in sin
if you do not attend a UPC church and get there every time the door opens
if you do not give 15 percent of your gross income to the pastor of that UPC Church
if you disagree with or bend or break any of the rules as laid down by that pastor
if you speak any word of criticism against that UPC pastor
if if you have any facial hair and the hair on your head is parted in the middle, or spiked, or is long enough to touch your ears or collar
if you have a tv or monitor or computer in your home, garage, rv or vacation home
if you are guilty of disobeying any of the rules as set forth in the UPC Manual

BTW, does this mean you can't tell the difference between an ordinary disaster and one sent by God as punishment or a warning?

I have to go with the heathern here on this one. Even if you are NOT "in sin" - you can and should expect some sort of calamity or disaster. That's just the way life is.

If you manage to escape the floods, pestilence and most of the burning itching of psoriasis, you'll still have to face the final judgement and woe of this life - death. And, whether you die "in sin" or not, you still die. So how is anyone any better than anyone else, at least with regard to "judgments" in this life?
