Some of these phrases not found in the bible remind me of something. Many are not written as such, but the concept is written. And many of these phrases were coined by people who really knew the scriptures enough to be able to express a synonymous phrase with what is written in order to more easily relate it to others.
Yes sir... but the lesson is about studying to shew thyself approved that you won't be ashamed.
The "concept" of God robing himself in flesh is there... but I had heard it over the pulpit and assumed they were quoting scripture to me and found myself ready to show a trinitarian that scripture and couldn't find it.
I hadn't studied to show myself approved and I found myself ashamed.
Concepts become "scripture" in peoples minds and then other "concepts" derive from these concepts and off we go into crazy land.
Streets of Gold... Really? I'll have to check that out. That will be a good one. I thought that was in there.
Sinners left behind... I like that one... because in the examples given you WANT TO BE the one left behind.
Revelation 21:21
And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
Talking about the New Jerusalem, which came from heaven. Heard a preacher say it was a scientific fact that 100% pure gold would be transparent, like glass. Seems like somebody may have posted that here, too.

Hebrews 13:23 Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty
If there were 12 disciples, why are 13 listed amongst the gospels: Simon Peter, Andrew, James son of Zebedee, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, Judas Iscariot and Nathaniel? (Mt 10:2-4, Jn 1:35-51)
Wow... that's a good question. That's a thread all it's own there.
Except a man be born again of the water and of the spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (A common misquote, of John 3:5)
That's a good one! However that "again" always gets thrown in there because it is used several other times in that same chapter reference ... John 3:3 "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God"
JOhn 3:7: "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
I hadn't studied to show myself approved and I found myself ashamed.

Me too!!! I agree with this!
I love this post, it is amazing how we believe for years things to be in the Bible, and what a shock when we find out they're not! I for one, never noticed it said "street" of gold, had always thought of it as streets - don't know if that makes a difference, but interesting anyhow!
