One meaning of judgment is "the setting of things right", God's mercy and His severity result in a curative effect. Call it punishment, purging, correction or according to Malachi it is "a refiners fire" and a "launderers soap". The fire will burn all that is dross, that "...his soul will be saved, howbeit by fire".

Most folks "gospel" is anything but "GOOD NEWS".
