One will go to hell into the regions of darkness because the light of heaven shining upon the grotesque countenance of him/herself would be too much for one to bear. The darkness of hell would seem to be a great relief from such vivid exposure to a sin-twisted, gnarled, monsterous condition of the spirit.
One goes to hell because the tortue of the presence of a holy God in the presence of evil would seem far greater than any perceived tortue of hell. Hence the "voluntary jump from atop the twin towers" syndrome. The burning fire inside top of the World Trade Center was less acceptable than a plunge for the 84th floor. So will the plunge into hell be more inviting. The headlong plunge into the retgions below will seem far more bearable.
Lastly, one will plunge themselves into hell since God sends no one there. When one loves their evil, they will gravitate toward it regardless of the consequences that follow. Since there is no repentance in eternity, one will grow to love their evil more and more through eternity.
But, when seeking relief in their evil state while being tortued in the presence of a holy God, seeing their awful grotesque condition in the light of heaven, when one does plunge headlong into the darkness seeking relief, they can never escape from that abyss, forever chained in the regions of the damned.
The bible speaking of hell refers to it in the plural..."being in tormentS."
