I don't think that testing the gold flakes would be "unbelief."
In Malachi God told those Old Testament Levites/Priests to "prove" Him (
Mal 3:10) and in
1 Thessalonians 5:21 we are exhorted to "prove" things like prophecy, etc.
Besides, if they were real gold, it might be a way to help people or churches meet their budget in these tuff times.
