You were not being ridiculed. Your comments were. I agree in part, some of their comments were ridiculous. Please don't martyr yourself before a real discussion takes place.

Just curious...what do you make of this scripture? (Using similar logic--although the topic isn't really even close)

1Co 7:34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

It appears that Paul is saying that married women are allowed to care for the things of the world, presumably in the process of pleasing their husbands.

Would you agree with that?

My take on it is that I choose music that is uplifting and positive. Whether it's authored by a Christian or has specifically Christian lyrics isn't important to me. Sometimes I like to listen or sing worship music; sometimes I like to listen to romantic music. Sunday mornings I love to turn on my Mississippi Mass station on Pandora, and other times I want to hear French guitar.

I don't see how listening to secular music is equivalent to listening to music that promotes sin or has explicit/obscene content. There is a LOT of positive secular music.

Instrumental music shouldn't even be in this debate, but I knew an Apostolic woman who believed classical music was bad because some of the composers were morally corrupt.

If by "worldly" music you mean music that promotes sin, then we might agree; if by "worldly" music you simply mean anything that's "secular" then we are poles apart.

Don’t miss understand me…..I think its more important to start teaching on the fruit of the spirit and avoiding the works of the flesh…in most cases someone filled with his spirit would realize that secular music is just appealing to your flesh and will avoid it but there are times to just be plain about and teach on these kind of things

Lyrics:

Quote:
When I was wandering in the desert and was searching for the truth .
I heard a choir of angels calling out my name.
I had the feeling that my life would never be the same again
I turned my face towards the barren sun.

And I know, of the pain, that you feel the same as me.
And I dream, of the rain, as it falls upon the leaves.
And the cracks, in our lives, like the cracks upon the ground.
They are sealed, and are now, washed away.

You tell me we can start the rain.
You tell me that we all can change.
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away.
You tell me we can start the rain.
You tell me that we all can change.
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears.

And I know, of the pain, that you feel the same as me.
And I dream, of the rain, as it falls upon the leaves.
And the cracks, in the ground, like the cracks are in our lives.
They are sealed, and are now, far away.

...
Iron Maiden - "Rainmaker"

Iron Maiden is described as a heavy metal band. They are not a Christian band. So what is wrong with this song?

Re: Christian people listening to secular music

Another *awful* secular song:

Anyway - Martina McBride

You can spend your whole life buildin'
Something from nothin
One storm can come and blow it all away
Build it anyway

You can chase a dream
That seems so out of reach
And you know it might not ever come your way
Dream it anyway

God is great but sometimes life aint good
And when I pray
It doesn't always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway
I do it anyway

This worlds gone crazy
And it's hard to believe
That tomorrow will be better than today
Believe it anyway

You can love someone with all YOUR heart
For all the right reasons
And in a moment they can choose to walk away
love em anyway

God is great but sometimes life aint good
And when I pray
It doesn't always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway
Yeah I do it anyway, yeah,

You can pour your soul out singin'
A song you believe in
That tomorrow they'll forget you ever sang
Sing it anyway
Yeah sing it anyway, yeah, yeah

It's not always even his comments were being ridiculed. Rather by using comparison absurdities they showed how absurd his argument was.

Secular music covers a broad spectrum of music and HTB left that largely undefined as to what it covers. If it covers ALL non-Christian music then these people have a valid point HTB just dismissed

Second, why is secular music bad but secular everything else is not?

Valid points, dismissed as "Conservative bashing"

The problem we have here is that you never defined "secular music"

Re: Christian people listening to secular music

I do feel joy when one of my grandbabies sing me a song they are learning in church. And just as much when they sing itsy bitsy spider.

Some secular music should not be listened to, I agree. But, not all should be condemned.

AMEN ! There are certain songs I just can't listen to now because of what actions they were associated with, mostly like partying [ drinking ] I used to listen to Jimmy Buffet , I can't bring myself to listen to it anymore . I also shy away from music with offensive lyrics.
