Wow. Lots of people lose their hospital-issued birth certificates. That's not a big deal. They're meaningless when it comes to getting documents, anyway. That's why you have to fill out a form and order the "official" document. Maybe it wasn't that way years ago, but that's how it works now.
IMO a state-sealed birth certificate and a newspaper birth announcement is pretty good evidence that he was born in Hawaii. It's not like his mother could have emailed in the birth announcement from another country. That was back in the day when you had to either make a phone call or go down to the newspaper office in person to get something put in. When my oldest daughter was born, I had to fill out a form that the hospital gave me the same day she was born, and then they turned it in to the newspaper office.
