I don't hold those things as things as things of great importance unless they are done in such a way that it becomes a carnal obsession.

Ahhh, yes, I agree we should NOT draw attention to ourselves. I think it is important to dress modestly, but not look different from the average person on the street. If we turn heads due to how we dress, and how we dress represents people that judge others and look down their nose at people that don't dress like them, it is very hard to think we are dressing humbly.
If we turn heads because we are showing off our body and causes the avg. opposite sex to stumble, that would be my personal measure of modesty.
Even though I personally don't like earrings on men, I don't think it is my business to ponder if they should have them or not. If they are a Christian, then it is between them and God. If they are not a Christian, then I expect they will dress however they want.
I personally know someone that works with some "rough" characters, and he dresses differently than he would if he were working with business men. If he were working with businessmen, I suspect he would wear a suit and tie, which by the way is VERY worldly to me.
By "working" with them, I mean he has a ministry that focuses on ex-cons and motorcycle guys.

I thought he was talking about real gauges...like rain gauges or something. Should I google it?

Well again as I posted somewhere on here. People are supposed to have received the Holy Spirit who is the counselor and teacher. I don't know why we would have to tell anyone anything concerning that which is right in the presence of the Lord.
I'm like you, I believe people will and can justify anything they do if that's what they want to do. My stand is this; this earthly vessel will pass away and the things on this earth,my focus is to lay up in heaven treasures that don't pass away. Can you say amen with me on that one..

Actually Hebrews 10:5 and the OT passage it quotes, Psalm 40:6, could be used to show that Jesus had His ear pierced. (ref Exodus 21:1-6)

I read both of those scriptures. How would you ever come to such a conclusion using them. I can not see any relation. Just wondering.

Herews 10:5-6 says:
5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
This is a quote from Psalms 40:6 which says:
6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened (or pierced), burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
Verse 6 above is from the KJV which is based on the Masoretic or Hebrew text. The author of the book of Hebrews quoted from the LXX and that is the reason the OT verse referenced in Hebrews does not agree with our OT.
The idea of a pierced ear (or ears) had to do with the "love slave" of Exodus 21, i.e a slave who could go free but chose to serve voluntarily because of his love for his master and family. In reference to Jesus it may have been entirely symbolic. I don't honestly know how many Jewish men from Galilee of the Gentiles wore earrings in the time Jesus walked the earth as a man. Also, I don't know if the practice of the "love slave" was still being done at that time. So, we don't know for sure whether Jesus wore an earring or not.
