I can't imagine doing this to an infant, or even a child, actually. I'm reminded of a "Toddlers and Tiaras" episode where a little girl's piercing had grown back together and her mother forced the earring back through in spite of the tears. It was heart breaking. I'm not sure why that wasn't considered abusive behavior.
