To make matters worse, the languages of these men were living. The languages changed and words took on new meanings and new connotations. In fact, english has changed soo much from what it was originally that most of us would have difficulty deciphering a passage written in Old English.
So what does all this mean? It means that we cannot take as fact any doctrine based only off a word in the bible that may have had different connotations in the day in which it was written.

Language does change but not necessarily to the degree you are portraying.
Additionally linguists are able to look to antiquities and see how those words were used
