Well the rope and bells myth held a lot of weight to many b/c it allowed them to tie it to receiving the Holy Ghost evidenced with tongues.

If you heard the bells...the sacrifice was accepted and the people were "saved" another year. If you heard tongues, the person had received the gift and was saved. The flip being that if you heard no bells/tongues...the person was still dead/unsaved.
