Which Movie Is Better?

Interesting question... Ran across this post today on Eternity Bible College's Faculty Blog. What do you think?

So, my oldest daughter is rapidly approaching the age of 10. Which movie would you recommend she watch? (I know many of you would say she should watch neither and try to say that films are a waste of time…nice try, I am wise to your antics.)

Should she watch a movie that is laden with pretty foul language, and a marginal amount of implied violence, but that also has a powerful and unmistakable theme of redemption and the redemptive power of meaningful relationships?



Or

Should she watch a film which is intended for children that has no foul language, but is ultimately a story of an adolescent girl rebelling against her father, bartering her soul to evil, seducing a man, and ultimately getting what she wants?



Which is more appropriate? Have at it….

Excellent question.

I would also add two more films.

Adult themes and foul language aplenty, yet guaranteed to not leave a dry eye in the room when done.

The little mermaid has a plot that promotes rebellion and sin? Parts are almost alegorical with Christianity whether intended or not.

1. Girl rebels and gets herself into trouble that can't be undone (Adam and Eve's Fall).
2. The girls Father offers to exchange himself in place of her. (Jesus taking our punishment in our place).
3. The witches spell gets reversed and both her Father and her are free. (The resurrection of Jesus).
4. The girl now gets to live a new and changed life as a human instead of as a mermaid. (The new man that the Holy Spirit lets us become or perhaps its a picture of heaven).

...I guess The Little Mermaid really teaches alot of bad stuff afterall. Kind of like how the bible teaches rebelling from God is okay since God ultimately makes a way to save us from our mistakes and we still ultimately get what we want, heaven

Or.....

Grand Torino is really a very good movie. And the Harry Potter one isn't bad either, though the story line is predictable.

Neither is appropriate for young children, because their values and maturity is not far enough along.

I would say that is stretching the line more than a little bit. If you stretched it much tighter, you would be able to use it as a guitar string.

I guess as long as you want to view the movie as only being about a rebellious girl who makes mistakes and faces no long term consequences for them then be my guest.... but just remember it isn't hard to dumb down Christianity's story to being about rebellious humans who make mistakes and face no long term consequences for them too.
