I generally only use one wire - about six inches down and about 24" hanging out the front. If you fear you are tweaking it "subconsciously" or otherwise, try these things:
Slide the wire through another piece of pipe which you then hold on to
Have someone bury the pipe in sand
Try it blindfolded
