The doctrine of the Trinity was formulated in an attempt to refute various errors (heresies). The doctrine of the Trinity refutes the notions:
-That Jesus was just a man (Ebionitism).
-That Jesus is a separate lesser being (Arianism).
-That Jesus is a temporary manifestation (Modalism).
The doctrine of the Trinity allows for a distinction between the persons of Father, Son, and Spirit...while affirming that they are the very same God from all eternity.
