Called "the law of Moses"
LUKE 2:22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord.
Called "Law contained in ordinances"
EPH. 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace.
Written by Moses in a book
2 CHRON. 35:12 And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
Placed in the side of the ark
DEUT. 31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
Ended at the cross
EPH. 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace.
Added because of sin
GAL. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Contrary to us, against us
COL. 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.
Judges no man
COL. 2:14-16 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Carnal
HEB. 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
Made nothing perfect
HEB. 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
And now consider the Law of God (the Ten Commandments):
The Law of God (Ten Commandments)
Called "the Law of the Lord"
ISA. 5:24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Called "the Royal law"
JAMES 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
Written by God on stone
EXO. 31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
EXO. 32:16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
Placed inside the ark
EXO. 40:20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:
Will stand forever
LUKE 16:17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
Points out sin
ROM. 7:7 What shall we say then? is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
ROM. 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Not grievous
1 JOHN 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
Judges all men
JAM. 2:10-12 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
Spiritual
ROM. 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Perfect
PSALMS 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
One of the greatest challenges of a Christian is to distinguish between the Law of Moses and the Law of God when reading about a Christian's relationship to the Law in the NT. The Law of Moses was nailed to the cross not the Law of God (Ten Commandments). The Ten Commandments still stand:
Matthew 5:18
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Yes, God inspired Moses to write those laws, and they are the Law of Moses. However, God Himself wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger, twice. Also, the Ten Commandments existed in Heaven long before Sinai... the Law of Moses didn't.
So no, I don't avoid shellfish. That prohibition ISN'T in the Ten Commandments. Yummy! lol
Thanks. Not 100% sure that all of those can be determined with certainty to distinguish, but, well, maybe I'll take your word for it.
Interesting, isn't it? Aquila thinks all ten of The Ten and none of the other stuff need to be kept, and Epley thinks only nine of The Ten and some of the other stuff need to be kept.

That really is not correct. ALL the other nine are found in the NT as commandments but the sabbath is not because it was fulfilled. Isreal kept the sabbath but today the Sabbath(Jesus) keeps me. Nor done away but fulfilled.

Epley claims that the custom of keeping the Sabbath isn't found in the NT. I guess his Bible doesn't contain the following:
Acts 13:14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day [seventh day], and sat down.
Acts 13:42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath [seventh day].
Acts 13:44 And the next sabbath day [seventh day] came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
Acts 16:13 And on the sabbath [seventh day] we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spoke unto the women which resorted thither.
Acts 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days [seventh day] reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath [seventh day], and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
Hebrews 4:4 For he spoke in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
Hebrews 4:9 NIRV So there is still a Sabbath rest [seventh day] for God's people.
Epley needs to READ his Bible instead of legalistic rule books full of the traditions of man.
Acts 20:7
And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
Notice... on the first day of the week when the church gathered to break bread (Lord's Supper), Paul preached to them until midnight. What many forget is that they counted their day as beginning at sundown. If Paul preached until midnight on the first day of the week... what day on our calendar did they meet??? Saturday night. Because Sundown Saturday night would begin the first day of the week. Then Paul preached until midnight.
If they met on Sunday night by our calendar... the text would say they met on the SECOND day of the week.
We know we are not saved by keeping the Ten Commandments. Do you believe in being sanctified by keeping the Ten Commandments?
1 John 3:24
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
1 John 5:2
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
That really is not correct. ALL the other nine are found in the NT as commandments but the sabbath is not because it was fulfilled. Isreal kept the sabbath but today the Sabbath(Jesus) keeps me. Nor done away but fulfilled.
Do you keep the 4th commandment or not?

I've been thinking about this a lot this morning. We are so hung up on death, hell, and the grave, which Jesus defeated to give us life more abundantly. Too bad we can't shift our focus more toward life instead of endlessly debating who is on their way to hell, or does our sense of balance depend on jockeying for position to see who is first and who is last? I'm tired of being obsessed with religion, I want to move away from the hell centric view and more toward joy, joy, unspeakable joy . . . righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.
No. He doesn't keep the Fourth Commandment. The Fourth Commandment reads:
Exodus 20:8-11 (ESV)
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
To keep the Fourth Commandment we must:
-We must REMEMBER the Sabbath day.
-We must make it holy, a time to worship.
-We must rest from working and refresh, celebrating life and all of creation.
-The entire family is to participate.
