Not sure if he is scared of Armageddon but he certainly knows his end and wants to do as much as possible to destroy others. I do think he feels like he has a chance of defeating God or he wouldn't bother but I think deep down inside him he knows he hasn't got a chance. BUT like most who believe they can win against the odds he will give it his best shot, almost like a slap in the face to God saying, "Just look at the people I have turned from you" kind of thing.
