Re: 10 Reasons Against Gay Marriage

NotforSale,

I'm not a coward that will hide behind questions. I'll answer your questions, I'm just curious if you'll rise to the occasion and answer mine.

And, to answer your question (which you refused to do regarding my questions) I can marry a 16 year old girl with her parent's permission. I cannot marry an animal because an animal cannot grant consent nor abide by civil contract. It would be the abuse and exploitation of another living thing.

Not true. Even though a Man and Woman decide not to have children before getting married, they may change their mind. Also, if they adopt, the Natural Balance is there.

No, it is true, in the cases I mentioned. Man+Woman=Nothing. If some change their minds, fine. Not all will. If infertile couples adopt, great. Gay couples can adopt, too. There is still no logic to be found in your stand, unless you also bar infertile couples from marrying, and bar fertile couple from marrying who don't intend to have children -- unless and until they change their minds, I suppose.

Yes, but below 16 years of age and the Law will step in and say no.

Not allowing same sex marriage is nothing more than saying no to unnatural behavior. With me, it's that simple.

Face it, it's weird when same sex couples get married and this illusion creates an imbalanced Society filled with confusion and doubt.

I’m with you on the Government becoming too involved with our personal lives, but marriage needs to be protected by someone, and I don’t have a problem with the Law of the Land being that someone.

Wrong.

Many do change their mind, but Gay people cannot change their mind.

I already addressed the adoption issue, but you are avoiding that one.

There is no need to "bar" an infertile couple because they are not going against Nature, sexually.

In case you hadn't noticed, certain "Things" belong in certain "Places".

I addressed the adoption issue. Guess you missed it.

Anyway, if you think homosexual behavior is unnatural, you'll have to prove it. (And that will be tough, since it has been observed in hundreds of species in nature.)

So, it's OK if we live like animals? Come on Timmy, hundreds of species in nature?

I've lived in Alaska, where Nature rings loud and clear. Sorry, but Bears, Fish, Moose, Geese, these all mate with the opposite sex.

I also don't see animals going down the street in a Parade with statues of a penis to prove they are Gay.

Yes, hundreds. It's less common than opposite sex mating, same as with our species.

In nature, they don't have to prove anything. Just just live the way they live, and nobody else of their species seem to be bothered by it. And yes, sometimes, we could learn a few things from nature!

Re: 10 Reasons Against Gay Marriage

Related to Aquila's post about getting government out of the marriage business...

I would never presume to know C. S. Lewis's thoughts on same-sex marriage, but I thought this paragraph from Mere Christianity was very interesting (emphasis mine):

Quote:
I should like to distinguish two things which are very often confused. The Christian conception of marriage is one: the other is the quite different question — how far Christians, if they are voters or Members of Parliament, ought to try to force their views of marriage on the rest of the community by embodying them in the divorce laws. A great many people seem to think that if you are a Christian yourself you should try to make divorce difficult for every one. I do not think that. At least I know I should be very angry if the Mahommedans tried to prevent the rest of us from drinking wine. My own view is that the Churches should frankly recognise that the majority of the British people are not Christians and, therefore, cannot be expected to live Christian lives. There ought to be two distinct kinds of marriage: one governed by the State with rules enforced on all citizens, the other governed by the Church with rules enforced by her on her own members. The distinction ought to be quite sharp, so that a man knows which couples are married in a Christian sense and which are not.
Personally, I'm still working out my own convictions about the same-sex marriage legislation, but Lewis's thoughts about distinguishing civil marriage and church marriage are helpful.

Regardless, we need to remember that we are dealing with real people and not just issues. Here are some words about the marriage debate from a Christan man who experiences same-sex attraction:

Quote:
By all means, please don’t keep silent about LGBT issues. But before you tell me I can’t marry a man, wait a beat to feel the weight of that call—one that could potentially involve prolonged loneliness and searing pain—with me. And before you tell me I ought to marry a man, wait a beat to feel the weight of that call—one that puts me into conflict with millennia of Christian belief and would potentially ruin relationships with many non-affirming people in my life—with me. If you’re unwilling to bear the weight of those calls, even for a moment, think seriously about whether the love of Christ is motivating your words before you click “Post.”
