I really think it is a pointless debate to talk about what "SHOULD" happen as it relates to gay marriage in America.
The thing we as christians should be talking about is our reaction to it. There is no point getting bent out of shape because it is going to happen.
What is important is that we be clear that while we reject no human being, we refuse to embrace that which is called sin in the bible.
A person cannot be married to a member of the same sex. It cannot happen because it is a covanant between 2 people and God and God will not enter into a covanant that he has already called an abomination.
That does not mean that the goverment, which is purely (and rightfully) secular will agree with the church. But what the Church had better do is insure that we retain the right to not perform such ceremonies.
Please note, this means if you are part of a church, you church had better be careful to only perform marriages for people that agree with the bylaws you have established.
If you agree to marry two people who are athiests, then you have likely moved beyond the protection granted to churches. Because you have become an organization that provides a service to the public in general. That means you are subject to anti-discrimination laws.
