As far as the video thing goes if you want to travel light there are a lot of compact still cameras today that take great high def video. For our trip to Europe I decided to leave the dedicated video camera at home at took the videos with my Canon SX230HS. Not as good video as a good dedicated video camera but plenty good for a family vacation and so cool not to be burdened down with a big camera. This Canon fit in my pocket and shot 1080p HD and had zoom and autofocus that work in the video function. Oh, and it took great still pics also.

Ferd, I would disagree with CC1's advice a bit. You need to take hundreds of hours of
high quality HD video -after all, this video will be watched for the rest of your life!
