I remember when I was single, "married with children" sister told me that "I had it made" because I had no children. My answer to her was that while I had no children, I still had to pay for rent, utilities, auto payments, gas etc on only my salary. Single life was not a care-free life.
She replied that she did not think about that.
There is always the option of roommates to share costs, but roommates usually have different lifestyles. I grew up frugal. We turned lights off when not in use. We turned heat down when we were not home. I had roommates before who never thought about how to save money and who would eat my food.
