I'm not sure where the idea came from, but in my study of languages one thing that was stressed is that names do not translate. Now, it may be that people in another land don't have the ability to speak certain sounds and a name may be pronounced slightly different due to accent/dialect, but every effort is made to preserve the pronunciation of names.
