Sometimes you leave the "good" behind before leaving the buffet.

Further, he commanded them to cease from fellowship those that went back to such things until such a time as they came to repentance. (1Cor 5 especially verses 9-11)

My emphasis was placed upon the words 'were' and 'but'.
In context Jay...
I Corinthians 6:9-17 (ESV)
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined[d] to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality.
You will note that these believers were "washed", "sanctified", and "justified"... in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the regeneration of the Spirit of GOD. This doesn't necessarily say that they no longer have proclivities towards these sins. Nor does it say that they never will if they are truly born again. In fact... Paul continues to illustrate to them how continuing in sexual immorality is a sin against God and then admonishes them to flee from such things.

Obviously, while they experienced justification, sanctification, and remission of sin through the name and the Spirit... the proclivities to possibly return to these sins still existed. It is possible for a genuine Christian (born again) to begin living below their calling in Christ. You see... spiritually speaking they WERE these things... therefore they should behave like it.

Re: Religious or Christian

However, you said that they were actively involved in those things. There was only one individual who at the time is mentioned as being in an ungodly sexual relationship, and Paul is reminding of them where they have come from. This is actually a continuation of the discussion from chapter five. The emphasis remains on the words 'were' and 'but' in these statements.

Nothing I said was taken out of context, and I checked my context first. For the sake of brevity, I merely quoted the relevant portion to our discussion. And it is for these very reasons that I do believe that there are some who sincerely think that they are Christian who hold these views, but that does not prevent them from committing sin by supporting the active shedding of innocent blood and the abomination that is homosexuality. One can not support these things in any form and remain a Christian.
