Uh, it was. The seceding states believed the federal government had overstepped its bounds, and was trampling on the rights and perogatives of the states. So they seceded. The Republicans rallied the north (somewhat) to the idea that states did not have a right to secede from the union.
The issue of slavery played a big part in all the hubbub, but the war wasn't fought 'to free the slaves', and it sure wasn't fought because Lincoln was some civil rights demigod (he wanted to end slavery so he could deport all blacks to Africa, because he believed - and stated clearly in his speeches and letters - that 'the African' simply could not and would not fit into american society in any way, shape, or form).
