I think that wilderness experiences can be metaphorical. In my case, God moved me across the country, away from all my friends and family, away from my happy church bubble, and a job that I loved, to a place where I only knew my (ex-)husband, and he spent every waking hour playing video games.
For years I asked over and over again "Why, God, Why?" until finally he told me:
Deuteronomy 8:2-3
New International Version (NIV)
2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
And you needed to learn all that? And that was the best way God knew of to teach you?
