White racism stopped me from being able to buy the home I wanted in the neighborhood I wanted in upstate NY back in 2007.
It is within the rights of a homeowner to determine who they sell their home to and they specifically told my agent that they didn't want to sell their home to a black person.
When I was in the Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Lejeune, I know for a fact that I had racists in my Company and even in my unit and there were a couple situations, accusations, and such that occurred, but the Lord brought me out on top. If it wasn't for the Lord though, it could have ended differently.
I had a few minor experiences when I lived in Mobile, but nothing that really affected my life-- short term or long.
I have had several dubious run-ins with law enforcement where I am sure my race played a factor. If I had responded the wrong way, things would have ended differently-- but I wasn't the one to initiate contact with the police. They initiated contact-- different police officers in various circumstances with the same m.o. and results.
As for stopping ME from succeeding, I don't think it has-- but I sound "proper" (aka "white") when I speak, I joined the military when I was 17 and most of my civilian jobs have somehow been related to my time in the service.
However, it has affected my Dad and he is still alive and not even elderly. It has affected some of my older cousins as well.
