If they had trousers under the tunic, the tunic would still get in the way. Which would mean they would have to gird up their loins still, trousers or not.

These people were fully covered just as God covered Adam and Eve in this garden. Genesis 3:21 "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them."

This word clothed meant "to be fully clothed." Though they wore tunics they had trousers (breeches) and belts apparently under them. Regardless the tunic had to be tied up, to run, and fight properly. So Joe there goes that theory.
