It's not a talking point when nobody has a beard. It BECOMES a talking point (and preaching point) when somebody decides to grow their beard out.
Although, in churches that do NOT have a no-beard position, it never becomes a talking point when someone decides to shave. Unless that church has a must-have-beard position.
If your 19 yr old kid doesn't even have a clue what a hippy is/was, I'd say they need to get up to speed on their American history, because if someone doesn't know what hippies are then they can't understand what's going on in society with all the red diaper babies running amok nor do they understand the huge social revolution that occurred post-WW2 that completed the subversion of America to what it has become.
