LIVE — ARREST OF REV. TONY SPELL on charges his attorney Joe Long says were “trumped up to try to shut down the church,” Life Tabernacle on Hooper Road in Central. Rev. Spell was shackled behind his back by Central Police under the direction of Chief Roger Corcoran. Last month Corcoran arrested Spell for holding worship services in violation of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ emergency orders. Then he held a news conference denouncing Spell. The pastor said, “The Declaration of Independence declares that all men are endowed by their creature with certain unalienable rights and that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men. That’s the purpose of our government. The Constitution spells out those rights and especially the First Amendment, which protects freedom of religion and freedom of assembly. Those rights cannot be suspended or superseded by a statement by the governor, which is not even law, much less something superior to the Constitution.” Attorney Joe Long said Rev. Spell was taken to the Parish Prison. He hopes he can be released on bail today. The pastor’s father, Rev. Timothy Spell said it is ironic that tens of thousands of felons have been released across America but they are locking up pastors who dare to hold church. The senior Spell said church will continue tonight whether or not his son has been released. He listed five pastors poised one by one to lead services if Rev. Tony Spell or any of his successors are sent to prison. Life Tabernacle services will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the main sanctuary.
