Brother Scott,
The word, "usurp" means to "dominate", so he doesn't want us to dominate a man's authority.
We see in
Eph 5:21, "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God." It then goes on to give admonition to both the husband and the wife.
It seems to be saying, at the outset,
that we submit to each other, which can only be out of love and respect or you wouldn't do it.
I see a wonderful balance here. If the Lord is telling the man to love his wife as Christ loved the church, then he is also telling a women to respect a man by not being dominate over his authority.
We don't Lord over each other.
