I hear you... I have no judgement in my posts (at least - yet)
The hand drumming circles are tribal and pagan in orgin - at least from my brief research. I am not sure that it matters a great deal though... Christianity mostly redefined Christmas and Easter too...
I am concerned that most all organized Drum Circles espouse at least some anti - biblical mission statements and goals... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_circle ... not sure why those could not be redefined for Jesus.

A drum circle is any group of people playing (usually) hand-drums and percussion in a circle. Other instruments and dance can also be incorporated into the drum circle. They are distinct from a drumming group or troupe in that the drum circle is an end in itself rather than preparation for a performance. They can range in size from a handful of players to circles with thousands of participants.
In 1991, during testimony before the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart stated:
Typically, people gather to drum in drum "circles" with others from the surrounding community. The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail. It includes people of all ages. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves. To form a group consciousness. To entrain and resonate. By entrainment, I mean that a new voice, a collective voice, emerges from the group as they drum together. [1]
I don't see how what the Grateful Dead guy said could even be seen as bad... They drum together becuase it promotes unity and a sense of community among people...
If it actually works it sounds like something we all should be doing....
and, yeah, drum circles appear in pagan tribal cultures... But I would be massively surprised if the Grateful Dead got the drum circle idea from African tribes....
Talk about opening ones self up to demonic spirits.............
you can't just make statements like this and expect to be taken seriously...
You need to support what you say, why do you feel this is opening oneself up to demonic spirits???
Because people use it to contact demons??? People pray to contact demons, too, so should we stop praying to God, too, along with not "drum circling" to God???

Oh I agree, and that is why I posted that portion. But, I provided the Wik link where there is plenty that is not so good with links to Drum Circles.

Okay...this seems to be not much different from a bunch of musicians getting together and jamming...however...I would be VERY careful what sort of group I got together with...certainly music is a very powerful force (including percussion). People have used it to summon demonic forces, and David used it to drive away evil spirits that were tormenting King Saul.
So...I don't know. It isn't the rhythm that worries me...or a group of musicians...its the purpose behind it, and who you join up with that would be of a greater concern.

I'm not generally out of touch but this is something I've NEVER heard of in Pentecostal circles.
You learn something new every day!
steady, The Pentecostal drum circles are still under developement This thread speaks of "Drum Circles" and "Christian" in a general sense. I am not aware of any sizable Drum Circles currently among Apostolics, though hand drumming is becoming popular.

And there ya go. Is this a good thing for a youth group?
POSSIBLY a great outreach tool?? I just don't know...
of course I am a hard core ultra Conservative myself, but I am sort of drawn to this idea.

A little defensive, huh?

As a musician, I have made careful choices about what I involve myself in. I have known Apostolic musicians who play jazz in local clubs on Friday nights, and church on Sunday. I can't do that...maybe it isn't a sin, but I know how caught up in music I can get, and so I want to make sure I'm getting passionate about the right stuff and with the right people.
I'm not completely against secular music...and I listen to some things...but on the other hand, I believe that God is the one who gave me this gift, and I have an obligation to use it in a way that honors Him. So...without ruling something out simply because of a preconceived idea...I would ask myself some questions....based on my own convictions.

My husband have been sitting at the dinner table before and he'll tap his glass, and I'll knock the table, and the kids will make another sound, and before you know it we have a rhythm going, and we're all laughing and having fun...so obviously a "drum circle" wouldn't be much different from that. It sounds like fun, in a wholesome setting.
