I had a new convert tell me recently she was witnessing to the secretary at her daughter's dentist. Come to find out she lived in the house right next to our church over 20 years ago. She said she would never come back to our church because as a kid, she was made fun of for wearing pants. People want to know I am militant against legalism? I have to clean up 50 years of this bovine excrement.
In order to do that, we have to utilize EVERY tool at our disposal. That includes having a community Halloween Bash. Complete with games, lights, free food, 50's and 60's music. Gave away a few ipods. Over 250 guests showed up for the event. Had 15 guest come the next day to hear the gospel of Jesus Chrsit. Still getting postive feedback from it. As of today, our Kidz Club minstry attendance increased 40%, we baptized a few people, others got the Holy Ghost.
This new convert and her family make me proud. We shot some video of this family's testimony. The local television station will air the video once we finish post production. This new convert would have been hamburger under that legalist system which dominated that church for years. I'm protective of my newbies. I am glad I don't have to indoctrinate them into cult-minded practices.

Nah, we don't. We are a Christian board. It grieves me how some (at least temporarily) leave God due to what happened to them in a church. Some can't separate the wrong things that happened to them from the Bible (because often the Bible was used with them) and God. Some develop such a distorted view of God- He's a harsh taskmaster, just waiting for them to mess up so He can do something bad to them or leave them lost.
That is the worst aspect of spiritual abuse- and, unfortunately, some never do return to following God.
