Re: I remember when...

Bro Paul Dennis was my pastor when I was a teen. They left our church to go to Japan as missionaries. That was a sad, sad day for our little church. I remember doing a "This was your life" service for them and ending with the choir singing "I'll See You in the Rapture". Not a dry eye anywhere in the house!

After they left, I moved to Pontiac. Where, wouldja know it, my pastor there was Bro Roy Well - who left to go to the mission field as well!!!

At that point, I figured I was just some sort of missionary trainer or something. Kinda like God was saying, "Hey, if you can make it thru this rebellious kid, you can be of real use to me on the mission field" LOL

Re: I remember when...

Our church gave out fruit at every Christmas until 2 years ago!
My husband remembers driving to Ringold, LA every Sunday night to sing and play for his Aunt Carrie that started a church there.
He remembers helping to dig the basement with a scoop and a mule for the Bossier Church when he was 14 years old.
He also remembers the night his mom was praying with a man in the altar. This man was overweight and when he bent over there was a gap in his pants. His mom in her zealous prayer, lost her bridge- it fell in the man's pants. She had to gingerly pick them up out of the gap in his pants and put them back in her mouth! He loves to tell that story.

Yes, it was March for Missions. Later, when they got wimpy, it was Kilometers for Christ and they only walked 20 km. My 70+ year old grandma did the 20 miles with us when I was a teenager, and my brother Scott did it and he was only 7.

I remember how the older people (over 30 crowd) would get back to the church which was the starting point and fall down like they were dying. Meanwhile, the kids and young people would get to the church and jump right into a game of volleyball.

Re: I remember when...

The only time we did the March for Missions was the same day there was a wedding at the church. Everyone showed up at the wedding, including the pastor, with a sunburn and sore feet!

Re: I remember when...

I didn't grow up in a Christian home, but I had a hungry, hungry heart. I remember getting my first transistor radio when I was about 11 years old. I would take it to bed with me at night, stick my head under my pillow and hold that radio as close to my ear as I could get it so I could keep the volume down low and not get caught. Then I would change the channel until I could finally tune in a station as far away as I could possibly get it. I was looking for "religious stations". Guys like RW Schambach and lots of probably locally known only folks from places like Iowa and Arkansas.

Then I would pray quietly with my head under my pillow until I'd fall asleep night after night. I had some very special times alone with God with my pillow over my head
