Well, consider that the Earth (and other planets in our solar system) were "formless" spinning disks of dust and rock as they became the planets they are today. This was also going on AS the sun itself was forming and before nuclear fusion started deep inside it. There would have been a dull glow from the increasing heat, but not the fiery blazing orb we know now as the sun.
