Dear Rhoni,

I just can't figure out why. I just seemed to be thinking about the years gone by.

The one thing I remember that does not seem to be around today.

It is the love for "Church".

I remember years ago we could talk about a service from a few year before like it was the last Sunday.

Today it seems like we just move on....

Things have been added to my belief system through the understanding of grace, mercy, and sanctificaiton but it all fits perfectly together in my mind.

What do you, or don't you believe from what you were taught growing up in the church? I am curious as to how many feel alike or differently from myself.

Thank-you for responding.

I also have changed my opinion about the "outward standards."

I have kept my understanding of the New Birth that I carefully sought out in the writings of the UPC back in the late 1970's and 1980's but watched as the UPC changed.

I am now persuaded of the validity of the "standard model" of cosmology as well as our modern scientific understandings of the biological evolution of life. I used to accept those things as a "secular humanist conspiracy."

I no longer hold to Seven Age Dispensationalism even though I can remember a time when I couldn't imagine a "sincere" believer believing anything else.

I still believe very confidently that Jesus Christ was God manifest in human flesh and that He came into this world to redeem us from our trespasses and sins.

When my family was evangelizing many years ago, my father was known for his preaching about the love and grace of God. Because of this many churches, or should I say pastors, wouldn't have him in their pulpit. Sad, but true. I’m so thankful that I was raised understanding grace, not condemnation.

Freudian slip?

asinine

1. foolish, unintelligent, or silly; stupid: It is surprising that supposedly intelligent people can make such asinine statements.
2. of or like an ass: asinine obstinacy; asinine features.

This sort of begs the questions...

Would our Elders really desire this to be so?

Did they/could they say the same thing?

Has there been any room for maturity in the past century?

Which Elders were the untouchables?

Were Haywood, Goss, Whitherspoon, Ewart, Norris, and Reynolds our Elders?

Re: Do YOU really believe what you were taught?

A sampling of things my elders (tried to) teach me:

If you stop working for God, He'll kill you.

Stay away from those Oneness Pentecostals.

Rock music is a sin.

Playing cards is a sin.

Homosexuality is a sin.

Dancing is a sin.

If you're in a theater when Jesus comes, He won't go in there to find ya.

If you're not tithing, God can't bless you.

If you're sick, all you have to do is pray and God will heal you.

Do you not believe any of these things are true?

Nope. OK, that last one has a possible hint of truth. If you are sick, and you pray, you will often get better, whether God did it miraculously or not. But as a blanket statement, it is clearly not true. Oh, and the first one. Yes, if you stop working for God (or not), you will die, eventually (again, whether God did the deed or not is anyone's guess.)

So homosexuality isn't a sin to you?
