I kept standards for many years. After we left the UPC about 10 years ago, I gradually went back to exercising some of the the same liberties I had when I was young. Now I've modified some things.
Even though I have liberty, my outward standard is dictated very much by what I consider the Word of God to teach in respect to principle and specifics regarding our outward appearance ...... also according to my own conscience i.e. what I personally feel comfortable about and ....... according to conviction i.e. feeling after what the Holy Ghost is and isn't pleased with in regard to my own personal life.

Thad, before I give my take on this, let me state that I grew up in a bonified UPC church and you would recognize the pastors' name. Now to reply...
Hair: as children our hair was trimmed and we had bangs ; I think many church ladies cut their hair, but there may have been those who did not, this was in the 50's and I was not aware of the "older" folks so much. At ABI I let my hair grow without trimming. While my husband had UPCI lic I did not trim. Since he is not licensed now, I feel the liberty to once again cut as necessary.(really fine, thin hair....when long it's "really" thin)
Clothing: remember this was the 50's and girls had to wear dresses to school; when we came home, we put on our "play clothes" which was slacks, and in warm weather shorts. Since this was the north, mixed bathing not really an issue....too cold to swim!
(Church camp had a lake....girls went swimming and the guys were at the ballfield__down the road and around a bend____when the girls were done the boys were allowed to swim, beautiful clear lake, sandy shore.....a vacation paradise...(WI no less)
Today I wear slacks for casual wear and work, but I wear dresses to church.
Many of my skirts have a side or back slit. It allows one to walk.....I've seen the sewed up slit and the inability to take a proper step.
Jewelry: once again, as children had a necklace or two, as did other little girls in church; adult ladies had wedding rings, watches and wore pins but not other jewelry. I wear wedding ring as well as a fashion ring on right hand. I own 20 watches, all styles, it's just FUN! Other jewelry on occassion. Never crossed over the line to pierced ears, lol.
Makeup....too much work; use the new mineral powders on the market. It covers the flaws and really looks natural.
There is a picture of my mother holding me as a baby (pre 1950) and she has a necklace on....she did not wear when we were older; as I understand it, when she first moved "north" and attended our church, she was surprised by the necklaces in use since in IL they didn't wear them;(and since there weren't always oneness churches to attend, she often went to an AOG church; in the 30's and 40's the AOG was strict....)
I'm not doing much today that is different from when I was 8 yrs old....and like I said, the church was UPC, UPC pastor, UPC district etc....
I might add, that church, pastor and district are more legalistic today.
