Aspartame (Nutra Sweet) basically becomes formaldehyde when it is heated. (Well, wood alcohol, which the body turns into formaldehyde.)

I've heard several medical doctors say the same thing, including Dr. Oz. My Dad's doctor told him a long time ago not to use it in his coffee, to use sweet'n'low instead. (in hot drinks)

Re: Vitamins

I take a multi for mature people, calcium with vit. D, and fish oil. I get my vitamins at
Sams. I eat lots of fruit and veggies, but I do like my diet soda. I drink two a day- which is down from 3-4 a day. I also drink at least a liter of water a day. I have gotten off of caffeine and can tell the difference in my sleep habits.

That's interesting. I wonder if body heat would have the same effect on the aspartame?

That's a good question; I don't know. According to several online reports, the methanol is liberated from the aspartame at 86 degrees. So I suppose its plausible that using it at all could be harmful. I'm not 100% sure about the studies, or their accuracy, but there's enough people in agreement (including medical professionals) to make me want to steer clear.

When it gets over 100 degrees why doesn't it morph in the packs I have at home?

Are you assuming that it would liquefy?

I just wonder why the temp inside the body affects it but outside the body it doesn't seem to.

What I read said that heat converts aspartame to methanol (wood alcohol), and the alcohol is what the body converts to formaldehyde. I haven't actually performed any experiments personally or looked at anything under a microscope, so I suppose I can't independently verify the accuracy of any study.

Several reports that I read said that even if aspartame is not [pre]heated, (thereby liberating the alcohol), the body could still cause the same effect once it's ingested, considering that it only needs to be 86 degrees or above. The idea being that its potentially harmful whether you heat it up in your coffee or not.

I would assume that if being heated on the stove or microwave would alter aspartame, then reaching high heat in your car, for instance, would have the same result.

Wink Re: Vitamins

I limit my diet coke intake, but haven't been able to totally give it up.

I've read some of the studies on its effects and it does make you pause. One article against any diet product basically stated that the chemicals fool your body and it doesn't know it received anything. This in turn causes overeating.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!
