But, Jesus' edict to not "give to be seen of men" makes no allowances for motive.

It's plain and simple - "That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. "

So, if your argument is that we shouldn't draw attention to ourselves, maybe we should wear drab grays, blacks and whites, with no buttons?

This would certainly fulfill the scripture directing us to wear "modest" apparel.

I believe in OT times women, more specifically "Brides" got all decked out in jewelry on thier wedding day, however there were also multiple wives that men could have & divorce, both of which Jesus said "stop!"

In the NT God doesn't want "bingles" "baubles" and junk around either a man or a womans body, but rather he wants to see an "ornament" of a beutiful spirit as evidenced by godly attitudes!

I agree with you...mostly. I just don't agree that God forbade bangles, baubles, etc., and replaced it with a beautiful spirit. Unless he was forbidding clothing at the same time.

I agree that we are to focus on the inward more than the outward. Which, IMO, is the point of the passage you are referring to.

Do folks who drive fancy automobiles to church drawing attention to themselves ?
Are they prideful for driving SUVS,and Cadillacs to church ?
I hope not because I drive a Cadillac!! It was given to me (used), free and clear, so I don't really care if it is a Cadillac, a Toyota, or a Ford.
