It doesn't make him evil. Anyone in his position would know that and probably make sure they took that into consideration with what they wrote.

The custom has always been that the prayer would be private. No one was to see it. Why would he think someone would go against tradition and reveal a private prayer? I honestly believe this act was sincere and he had no idea it would be leaked to the public.
