Were the disciples that Paul met at Ephesus saved up until the point in which Paul led them to further "light"...explanation of the gospel of Jesus Christ? And does their example apply to those who now believe in Jesus but haven't heard that there be any Holy Ghost?
Their salvation (or lack there-of) would depend on whether one has an allotment for a "light doctrine" of some kind in his theology.
As to the comparison of Johns disciples, to the disciples of Jesus today - who have indeed heard of the Holy Ghost but claim to experience Him differently - that would be apples to oranges IMHO.

Oh? Why's that? Because some of those people are icky? People who'd make heaven a terrible place to be? Dirty and smelly people, maybe? Guys with long hair? Ladies with short hair? People who don't deserve to be there?

A few years ago I heard Stan Gleason preach on "The Messy Church". In essence, God came to save sinners and they will be in the church. My memory is faulty as to the examples given but it was a great message.

No, the self righteous, they would think they deserved to be there!
